5 things you may not know about the Apple Watch Edition with white ceramic case

The new Apple Watch Edition with ceramic case may be priced considerably lower than the previous-gen gold Edition model, but it still starts from S$1,818. Let's see what else is in the box.

First things first: This isn’t meant to be an Apple Watch Edition review. If you want our opinion on the Apple Watch Series 2, our associate editor (and mechanical watch lover) Kenny Yeo has done a review here.

Rather, this gallery covers some of the things that aren’t immediately obvious on Apple’s website, or are often glossed over by review sites.

In short, if you care about the smallest of details or what else's in the box, read on.

At the moment, the Edition model only comes with an off-white “Cloud” sport band. This band isn’t available for sale separately, and even if it does, it’s unlikely to have the white matching pin that the Edition strap has.

Also, by default, the Edition comes affixed with the M/L length band. The S/M length band is in the sleeve that also holds the instruction leaflets.

You may know that the latest Apple Watch Edition has a white ceramic case, but do you know that ceteris paribus, it’s lighter than the stainless steel model, though still heavier than the aluminum model?

Still, I won’t recommend the Edition model for vigorous activities, because ceramic, while very resistant to scratches, may chip, crack, or even shatter upon impact.

The Edition model comes with a standard 1m magnetic charging cable, and this magnetic charging dock with Lightning-to-USB cable that usually goes for S$118.

Well…if you want to console yourself, take away the dock's value and that sort of puts the "actual" price of the 38mm Edition at S$1,700 and the 42mm Edition at S$1,770. (Actually, not that it really matters.)

Also in the sleeve is this little, nicely printed booklet about how the white ceramic case is made. You know - the zirconia powder, the alumina, the diamond slurry, etc.

OK, it doesn't make the Edition model run any faster than its Series 2 siblings, but it's still a nice touch.

Lastly, here’s one for those with OCD: Notice the part where the sapphire crystal meets the case has this ridge? Versus the other cases, the dimension difference on each side is merely 0.05mm, but it juts out just enough that you can feel it.

I posit Apple intentionally avoided thin, sharp edges with the new Edition model, to lower the risk of ceramic chipping. Some may feel this breaks the continuous look, but I’ll argue this shows that Apple understands the material it’s working with.
