Is July the month of foldable smartphone launches?

Honor, Samsung, and now Vivo have announced their folding handsets in quick succession. Here, the Vivo X Fold5 is one of the lightest in the market, weighing in at just 217g (2g more than Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7).

The phone is packing some major hardware upgrades. The humongous main display sits at 8.03 inches while fronted by a 6.53-inch cover display.

Both screens have a peak brightness of up to 4,500 nits, a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and support for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.

Vivo claims the “kinematic” hinge for the X Fold5 is rated for up to 600,000 folds. The phone also has IPX8 and IPX9 water resistance rating, on top of IP5X for dust protection. With a thickness of 9.2mm (folded), the phone is just a hair thicker than others like the Honor Magic V5 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7.

ZEISS-branded shooters

Vivo hasn’t skimped out on cameras. Continuing the brand’s collaboration with ZEISS, the X Fold5 gets a triple 50MP rear camera array. Included is a telephoto camera that supports 3x optical zoom, alongside the main and ultrawide cameras.

Running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, the X Fold5 features LPDDR5X Ultra RAM and UFS 4.1 storage, which barely compensates for the absence of the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chip found on other foldables sold here.

Big software, bigger battery

When it comes to software, the Vivo X Fold5 is taking full advantage of its large inner screen.

While other foldables offer split-screen functionality, Vivo’s Origin Workbench takes it one step further by allowing users to run up to five apps simultaneously, similar to Apple’s Stage Manager function on iPads.

There are also AI-powered functions, such as Smart Call Assistant, AI Transcript, AI Captions, and more.

Powering it all is a large 6,000mAh BlueVolt battery that utilises semi-solid-state battery technology, paired with 80W Dual-Cell FlashCharge wired charging and 40W Wireless FlashCharge charging.
