M1 to partner IDA to deliver affordable fiber broadband in low-income households
M1 has been appointed as IDA's Home Access program service provider to deliver high-speed fiber broadband to up to 8,000 low-income households. Under the program, eligible households will gain access to M1's 100Mbps fiber broadband service for just S$6 a month.
The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) has appointed M1 as its Home Access program service provider to deliver high-speed fiber broadband to up to 8,000 low-income households that have at least one Singapore citizen but do not have school-going children.
The program will enable eligible households to enjoy M1’s 100Mbps fiber broadband service, together with a network router and a 7-inch Alcatel tablet at just S$6 a month (inclusive of GST) on a 24-month contract. M1’s 100Mbps fiber broadband plan usually costs S$29 a month for a 24-month contract.
M1’s SunCare Club staff volunteers are also launching a new corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative as a complement to the Home Access program. Under the new initiative, M1 volunteers will conduct regular training sessions in the use of mobile applications and devices for Home Access households. M1 will work with IDA to schedule the training sessions, which are expected to begin in June this year, and ensure that households learn how to make the best use of their faster internet access.
M1’s collaboration with IDA is an important step toward eliminating the digital divide between different socio-economic strata. The company is also hopeful that the new initiative and training sessions can help improve the prospects of less privileged individuals in an economy where information is one of the key currencies.
The Home Access program is just the latest in a slew of new initiatives and collaborations to roll out from M1. Just last month, M1 announced that it was collaborating with MPA to enhance 4G coverage for the maritime community in Singapore’s waters. It was also the first telco to launch nationwide 4G service in South East Asia and offer 300Mbps 4G network speeds with island-wide coverage.
