Here's Vivo latest flagship phone - the Nex 3. It's powered by a Snapdragon 855 Plus processor, comes standard with 8GB RAM and 256 GB storage and will run Funtouch OS 9.1 (based on Android 9.0). This will be available from 2nd November 2019 at all major telcos for S$1,299.
It measures 167.44 x 76.14 x 9.4mm, weighs 218.5g, and will only be available in the Glowing Night colour for Singapore as seen here.
Like the new Huawei Mate 30 Pro, this too uses a notch-free waterfall-like display. The Nex 3 has a FHD+ (1,080 x 2,256 pixels resolution) 6.89-inch POLED display with a screen-to-body ratio of 99.6% - currently the industry's highest.
How it achieves a notch-free design is by way of a pop-up selfie camera. Vivo says the entire construct is more boxy because the selfie camera is now housed in a full-metal casing for better durability.
Something different is the use of touch controls on the side of the phone. The grilled area marks the middle of three smart touch-sensitive buttons which are set to increase volume, decrease volume, and power off the screen respectively.
Interestingly enough, the Nex 3 has both USB-C for charging and a 3.5mm audio jack. Vivo says this is for you to take full advantage of the AK4377A Hi-Fi DAC from AKM that's built-in the phone, so you can truly enjoy your music. For audiophiles who've invested in quality wired headsets, this is one of the rare few phones with a 32-bit audio DAC and a 3.5mm audio jack.
And here's a look at the camera set-up. The Nex 3 gets a triple rear camera system with a 64MP f/1.8 main camera, a 13MP f/2.2 telephoto camera, and a 13MP f/2.48 Wide angle camera. It has a super macro mode that lets you get close up to 2.5cm, and also comes with AI enhancements like Body Shaping, Scene Recognition, and Portrait framing.
Now for some quick photos. One thing we noticed was that the Nex 3 tends to oversaturate the red channel. It's even more obvious when red is the dominant colour, as is the case here.
Take a wider view of things, and the red bias doesn't seem so obvious. As you can see from this image here, the wide-angle lens gives you very usable field-of-view. However, it's a little lacking in fine detail.
Finally, here's a look at what you can get with the super macro mode. That 2.5cm minimum focusing distance can really bring some impressive results, so that's definitely a feature worth exploring. We'll explore the phone in more detail when it gets launched later in the year.
