Tecno’s Phantom Ultimate G Fold could be the first tri-fold phone with proper Android

Is this just a concept device with some of its hardware specs already in place?

Tecno wants to join in the frenzy by throwing its hat into the foldable ring. It just announced the Tecno Phantom Ultimate G Fold, a concept tri-folding Android phone with a dual inward-folding design.

According to Tecno, the phone measures 11.49mm when folded, thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 bi-fold. The latter is 12.1mm with only two panels.

When unfolded, the concept phone is 3.49mm at its thinnest pane. Tecno did not specify if all panels are equal in thickness, even if the images imply that they are.

Our tissue-paper math, which barely passed PSLE, tells us it’s not. 11.49mm isn’t cleanly divisible by 3.49mm, and a USB-C port would make at least one side ~4mm, if the Honour Magic V5 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 are anything to go by.

That said, a difference of ~0.5mm across each panel would likely be indistinguishable to the naked eye, and imperceptible to the touch for some.

While Tecno said the phone’s 0.03mm Titan Fibre back cover helped achieve its build, the Phantom Ultimate G Fold’s primary design principle is Tecno’s custom-made dual-hinge system. It consists of one waterdrop hinge and one larger primary hinge.

The smaller hinge offers its gapless inward fold to imitate a “traditional” book-style bi-fold, while its bigger hinge brings the last panel above the first two like wrapping a murtabak (folded flatbread).

This is unlike the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate, whose tri-fold design is closer to that of a byōbu (Japanese “wind wall”, a folding screen).

When unfolded, the display is 9.94 inches. Other specs include a “high-performance chipset”, a triple camera system, and a battery that’s “over 5,000mAh”.

Concept nia, will really launch meh?

When asked, a Tecno spokesperson told HWZ that there are no mass production plans for the Tecno Phantom G Fold, despite the phone being ready for production.

However, it will be on display at Mobile World Congress 2026 (MWC 2026).

Our preference leans towards having the device, as there are no commercially available tri-folds with full Android compatibility. As demonstrated in our previous Tecno phone review, the company is more than capable of bringing the Android OS onto its handsets.
