Google and Samsung working on fixes for the recent crashing wallpaper bug

A rounding error, you say?

Don't worry, this cropped version is safe.

Remember this cursed wallpaper that’s been going around crashing and soft-bricking Samsung and other Android phones?

At first, the guess was that this is a result of an improper handling of the image’s colour space. But now, Romain Guy, who leads Google’s Android Toolkit team, has chimed in to explain that the problem is actually how luminance is computed.

Long story short, if you look at this issue described by LineageOS, the problem stems from how the maximum greyscale values for histograms are calculated. Due to the auto round-up of the final value, that value may exceed the maximum value of 255, causing the system to crash.

In any case, both Google and Samsung are aware of the issue and are already working on a fix, which will most likely come by way of an OTA update.
