A report from Nikkei Asia says Apple will launch a new iPhone SE model next year with an OLED display.
This move means Apple would have transitioned its entire iPhone lineup from LCD displays to OLED ones. Apple started using OLED displays in its phones in 2017 with the iPhone X.
It also means that two of Japan's biggest panel suppliers, Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp, will no longer make any display for iPhones. This is notable because just a decade ago, the two companies accounted for 70% of all iPhone displays.
From the report:
Apple will use organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays in all iPhone models sold next year and afterward, switching its lower-priced iPhone SE models to OLED screens from liquid crystal displays (LCDs)
Now, Apple relies mainly on three companies for its OLED displays. They are Samsung, LG, and China’s BOE.
As for JDI and Sharp, the former only supplies small OLED displays for Apple Watches and is restructuring its business around providing LCDs for automotive applications.
Sharp, on the other hand, is said to be scaling back its LCD business. The company ceased operations at its Sakai plant in Osaka and has reportedly cut back on production at its Kameyama plant too.
As for the upcoming iPhone SE, an earlier report said it would have an OLED display and that it would ditch its Touch ID button in favour of an all-display design. Apple will likely announce it in early 2025.
