Thinner, lighter OLED iPads could launch in 2024

The switch to OLED and a dry etching process will help Apple develop thinner, lighter iPads with "unrivalled image quality".

Apple is expected to launch thinner, lighter iPads with OLED panels in 2024.

ETNews claims Apple is testing the final prototypes of OLED iPads with LG Display and Samsung Display. The iPad maker is believed to be putting the prototypes through the same testing process several times.

Apple is said to be using a dry etching process to manufacture the OLED panel for the iPad. Compared to wet etching process where chemical substances are used, dry etching uses reactive gas and ions to remove unwanted materials.

Dry etching is more expensive, complex and slower to process, but it is less prone to contamination compared to wet etching. The dry etching process will help Apple design thinner and lighter iPads, and the OLED panel will offer "unrivalled image quality".

LG Display is reportedly expanding its small and medium-sized OLED plant in hopes of securing a deal with Apple to supply panels for the iPads. TheElec reported in March that LG Display is working on two models of OLED panels for Apple. Chinese display panel maker BOE is also vying for a deal with Apple; it is building a Gen 8.6 IT OLED panel production line.
