Weeks ago, Apple announced that record profits of US$18 billion for the holiday quarter. This was led by strong sales of its iPhone and Mac. Sales of iPads, however, continued to decline.
And according to well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, he expects sales of iPads to dip further. Specifically, he is predicting that sales of iPads this quarter will fall a staggering 50%. A fall following the holiday quarter is usually nothing to be alarmed about, but 50% is substantial. He also said that shipments will struggle to exceed 45 million units, which would mean a decline of 30% year-over-year.
Apple is expected to launch a new larger 12.9-inch iPad later this year, but Kuo thinks that will do little to boost sales.
This is not new as sales of tablets have been declining for quite some time now. In July last year, Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly said that sales of tablets were "crashing."
Nevertheless, Apple CEO Tim Cook remains optimistic and called the decline in sales a "speed bump."
