Microsoft is reportedly gunning for the entry-level tablet segment with a new range of low cost Surface tablets after Apple gained market success with its entry level 9.7-inch iPad.

Sources told Bloomberg that Microsoft is planning to launch the low cost Surface tablets in the second half of the year. They are said to have 10-inch displays, rounded edges and USB-C connectivity. They are also 20% lighter and the battery life is likely to be four hours shorter than the current Surface devices.

The new line of Surface tablets will start from US$400 and come with a range of cheaper accessories including keyboard covers, stylus and mouse. Consumers can choose from different configurations such as 64/128GB storage options and LTE connectivity.
