If you want a paper-like device to take notes, but you don't want a pure note-taking device like the ReMarkable 2, Huawei's latest MatePad 11.5-inch PaperMatte Edition might be the answer.

First announced in Barcelona, Spain, in September 2023, the MatePad 11.5-inch PaperMatte Edition is a tablet that uses nano-level anti-glare etching technology to eliminate up to 97% of environmental light interference, reducing glare even under bright conditions.

The glass of the 2,200 x 1,440 display is also smooth to the touch. Huawei claims the touch surface is more responsive, with up to 120Hz refresh rate and a smaller contact surface for registering responses. Additionally, a double-sided polishing cloth is included with the device that supposedly can remove minor scratches.

Running on a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor, the tablet comes in only one configuration, with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. A few accessories can be paired with the MatePad 11.5-inch PaperMatte Edition tablet, but the most obvious one would be the Huawei M-Pencil (2nd Generation).

The tablet comes with micro-vibrations and sound effects to more accurately mimic the experience of writing on paper, and the 4,096 levels of pressure sensing on the M-Pencil (2nd Generation) enhance that while offering stylus functionality on a system-wide level.

Running on HarmonyOS 3.1, the tablet also has Huawei Notes. This self-developed app can import material in a variety of formats, convert handwriting to text, annotate, record audio while handwriting and more.

With a 7,700mAh battery, the MatePad 11.5-inch PaperMatte Edition is said to be able to last 10.5 hours of consecutive video playback, so it should be enough for a full day of note-taking and work.

Despite a €500 price tag in Europe at launch, we'll get the tablet for just S$598 here in Singapore, which is in our favour. Pre-orders are now available and the tablet will be officially available from 3 March 2024 onwards.

There are S$20 early bird vouchers available on Lazada and Shopee, and purchases come with a free M-Pencil (2nd Generation) and Huawei Smart Keyboard.
