ASUS announced the 7-inch Fonepad, an Android 4.1 tablet that has voice call capability, and is powered by the new Intel Z2420 Atom processor at Mobile World Congress 2013.

Measuring 10.4mm and weighing 340g, the Fonepad is designed to be portable and lightweight for daily use by consumers who want the combined features of a smartphone and tablet.

Powered by Intel Atom Z2420 processor, ASUS claims that the Fonepad strikes a balance between performance and energy efficiency. We will put these claims to the test when we have a review unit. Its 7-inch display is pretty decent - an LED-backlit IPS panel with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.

While the U.K model lacks a rear camera, the Asia Pacific variant comes with a rear 3MP camera. However, the former is equipped with 16GB built in storage while the latter has only 8GB. Nonetheless, both models support microSD cards of up to 32GB. Other connectivity options include a microUSB port, 3.5mm audio output jack, GPS with GLONASS, accelerometer.

The ASUS Fonepad will be available in March with a price tag of US$249. It will come in two colors: titanium gray and champagne gold.

Despite its affordable price tag, ASUS did not sacrifice on the build quality of the Fonepad. Its rear metallic back with tapered sides gives the device a great feel and handling.
