Don’t be alarmed if you have a new M4 iPad Pro and can’t seem to update to iPadOS 18. That’s because Apple has pulled the update for M4 iPad Pros after several users complained that the update left their tablets inoperable.
Reports from Reddit show that several users are suffering from the same problem. According to a user, the iPad Pro turned off at some point during the update and would not turn back on. The model in question is a 13-inch M4 iPad Pro.
That said, not all M4 iPad Pros are affected. I updated my unit, an 11-inch iPad Pro, without a hitch.
Although it’s unclear what’s causing the problem, MacRumors believes it could be related to installing the iPadOS 17.7 update before installing iPadOS 18.
For what it’s worth, I didn’t update to iPadOS 17.7 before updating to iPadOS 18.
Though Apple has yet to publicly acknowledge and comment on the issue, the fact that the company has pulled the update for the M4 iPad Pro is a sign that something is not right and that a significant number of users could have been affected.
Apple has since issued a statement saying that they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix. It said:
We have temporarily removed the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pro models as we work to resolve an issue that is impacting a small number of devices.
We will update this article if and when there are new developments.
**Update on 4 October, 2024**
Apple has just released iPadOS 18.0.1, which addresses the issue and is available for M4 iPad Pro to install and update. iPadOS 18.0.1 also addresses other bugs and performance issues.
You can update your M4 iPad Pro by going into the Settings app, and then General, and then Software Update.
