Apple's foldable iPad might come with more than just a crease-less display according to tipster Digital Chat Station.
The tipster claims that Apple has one engineering prototype of an 18.8-inch foldable device with an under-display Face ID. Digital Chat Station describes the implementation as a "metal superstructure lens" that integrates Face ID components for under-display facial recognition.
How significant would an under-display Face ID be for the 18.8-inch device? The current implementation of Face ID on the iPhone and iPad creates the dreaded notch in the top centre of the display. A notch on a screen of this size would be more obvious, almost like an imperfection, and would wreck Apple's dream of having "a screen that looks like a single, uninterrupted piece of glass".
Rumours have been circulating for several years that a future iPhone could be equipped with an under-display Face ID. However, a recent report suggested otherwise and said that the foldable iPhone will use Touch ID as a side button instead due to the slim design.
The 18.8-inch foldable device could be the first Apple product to support an under-display Face ID. The foldable device is expected to be a dual-screen, foldable MacBook/iPad hybrid, and arrive sometime in 2028.
