With pre-orders for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro starting later today and retail availability from 31st March, Apple is expected to ship significant numbers of the new tablet.

According to DigiTimes Research, Apple is estimated to ship four million units of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro in the first half of the year. The iPad Air 2, which has a price cut of S$120, will account for the bulk of the iPad shipments in the same period. Demand for the iPad mini 4 may take a hit due to the more affordable iPad Air 2.

The global tablet market is expected to shrink further this year due to little hardware innovation, limited vendor portfolio updates, longer life cycles and increased competition from bigger smartphones. Apple's release of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro and price cut for the iPad Air 2 may help accelerate the upgrade cycle and boost sales in the coming quarters.
