Amazon has bolstered its e-reader lineup with three new versions of the Kindle Scribe – one with a front light, one without, and the first-ever colour model. For those unfamiliar with Amazon’s lineup of e-readers, the Scribe differs from the Kindle in that it has a larger display and features a stylus for note-taking.
Lighter, thinner design
The new Kindle Scribes feature a new paper-like design measuring just 5.4mm - even slimmer than the recently announced 5.6mm Apple iPhone Air. They are also lighter, weighing 400g compared to their predecessor's 433g.
Bigger display with new features
Despite the slimmer design, Amazon has equipped the e-readers with a larger 11.0-inch glare-free display, up from 10.2 inches on the last generation. The screen also boasts some improvements:
- A new texture-molded glass for more realistic pen-on-paper friction
- A reengineered display stack that makes writing feel closer to the screen
One of the models has a new front light system with miniaturised LEDs, offering slimmer bezels and uniform lighting. The first-ever colour model is built with custom Coloursoft technology, combining a colour filter, light guide, and nitride LEDs for improved vibrancy. There is also a new rendering engine to deliver more natural writing and colour accuracy.
AI-powered search and new productivity features
Integrating AI to boost productivity, the Kindle Scribes can search notes across your notebooks and get summaries. Moreover, you can refine search results through follow-up questions.
There is a new homescreen with a Quick Notes section for you to jot down thoughts. Additionally, there is support for Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, making it easy to import documents for markup and export annotated PDFs.
Availability and Pricing
Amazon says the Kindle Scribe with a front light and Kindle Scribe Coloursoft will be available later this year in the U.S, starting from US$499.99 (~S$644) and US$629.99 (~S$811). The Kindle Scribe without a front light will launch early next year for US$429.99 (~S$554).
