Your next Android smartphone may not have a headphone port either

Like it or not, the writing may be on the wall for the 3.5mm headphone port. The USB Implementers Forum has just published its Audio Device Class 3.0 specification, giving device makers the standard they need to deliver an audio signal through a USB-C port.

The Moto Z won't be the last Android phone without a headphone port.

Like it or not, the writing may be on the wall for the 3.5mm headphone port. The USB Implementers Forum has just published its Audio Device Class 3.0 specification, giving device makers the standard they need to deliver an audio signal through a USB-C port.

Like Apple, the USB-IF states that delivering audio over the same port that charges the device will allow "OEMs to remove the 3.5mm analog audio jack, shaving up to a millimeter off product designs and reducing the number of connectors on a device."

Earlier this year, Lenovo released the Moto Z and Moto Z Force, both of which lack a headphone port. However their USB-C ports aren't able to deliver audio and users have to make use of Bluetooth headphones or the USB-C adapter supplied with the phone.
