Following rumours of major rebrand for Apple's software versions at WWDC 2025, it appears that Xiaomi is also considering a similar naming strategy for its HyperOS phone reskin.

Previous rumours hinted that Apple might discontinue its sequential version numbering in favour of year-based naming for its software versions (e.g. iOS 26, iPad 2026 etc. for 2026 updates).

XiaomiTime speculated several compelling reasons" for Xiaomi to take on a similar naming approach:

  • The new approach provides greater clarity for consumers with software timeline and relevance.
  • It helps to standardise software releases across different markets and regions.
  • It is a future-proof strategy for the long-term sustainability of the naming convention.
  • It can be seen as getting "market alignment" with Apple (whatever that means).

HyperOS is Xiaomi's custom user interface for phones, tablets, and wearables. The current version is HyperOS 2, and debuted in the Xiaomi 14T phone series. The Chinese company previously started its global roll-out for supported devices in November 2024.
