Xiaomi could start using its own processors on 2025 phones.
Bloomberg reports that Xiaomi is slated to begin mass production of its own mobile chips next year and could even power the company's 2025 phones.
The Chinese company's decision to use its own mobile chips is said to be driven by the need to be self-sufficient and distinguish itself from the other Android phone brands which use Qualcomm or MediaTek processors.
Furthermore, since a stable supply of chips is critical for any electric vehicle (EV) business, Xiaomi's goal to have its own mobile chips could benefit its EV business too.
Tipster @heyitsyogesh shared in August that Xiaomi's upcoming mobile chip will likely be based on TSMC's 4NP process and its performance will be comparable to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. In addition, the mobile chip will have a separate 5G modem built by Unisoc.
Xiaomi released its first in-house chipset in 2017. The Surge S1 was fabricated using a 28nm process and powered the Xiaomi Mi 5c. Unfortunately, efforts to develop its successor were ditched.
If and when Xiaomi unveils its next-generation mobile chip, the Chinese company will join the likes of Apple, Google, Huawei, and Samsung in using custom-designed chips.
