WhatsApp introduces Custom Lists for users to categorise their messages

It’s long overdue, but you can now specify chat lists for different groups and individuals in WhatsApp. #instantmessaging #whatsapp

WhatsApp has improved an existing feature, helping its users stay even more organised.

WhatsApp announced in a statement to the media that it now has Custom Lists, an expansion of the Chat Filters feature launched earlier this year.

Custom Lists let WhatsApp users create custom categories (such as family, work contacts, and friend groups). The user can then add individuals or group chats to each list.

This is similar to the Chat Folder feature on WhatsApp’s rival messaging app, Telegram.

(Fun fact for nerds: Telegram’s Chat Folders were introduced in 2020, and Telegram added the functionality to share organised folders via URL in 2023).

How to create and edit a Custom List on WhatsApp

In the WhatsApp app, go to the menu for your chat and messages, and find the “+” (plus) button inside the filter bar at the top of the message list.

Tapping the button allows users to create new lists. Long-pressing lets you edit and organise existing lists.

Users can add one-on-one chats and group chats to the lists they create.

The feature starts rolling out on 1 November 2024 and will be available to all WhatsApp users “in the coming weeks”.
