WhatsApp just announced (on 14 February 2025) an overdue feature that allows you to organise your chats using colours.
You can colour-code your chat bubbles using Chat Themes and use WhatsApp’s new wallpapers to personalise your chats and sort them out at a glance.
For chat bubbles, you can use preset chat themes that change both background and chat bubbles, or mix and match them to your liking. Separately, 30 new wallpapers were added, but you’re still free to upload a background from your camera roll like old times.
You can also apply the same theme to all chats, but mildly alter each chat to make it subtly different for your own reference.
It’s available for both one-to-one chats and WhatsApp Channels.
Here’s how you can make your WhatsApp more colourful:
- Go to WhatsApp on your device
- Go to the Settings menu
- Look for the Chats submenu > enter it and go to Default chat theme
To customise individual chats, iOS users can tap the chat’s name at the top of the chat screen. For Android users, it’s tucked away in the three-dot menu, under Chat Theme.
WhatsApp said this feature is rolled out globally and will eventually be available to all users in the coming weeks. If you don’t have the feature yet, you can update your WhatsApp or simply wait until it arrives.
