Why wasn’t this done sooner?

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that allows its users to send videos of higher quality, which might be rolling out soon.

According to WABetaInfo, selected beta testers saw new quality options when sending videos to the messaging app. Beta testers on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.14.10 can choose between “standard quality” or “high quality” versions of their videos. The option is also available to users on the iOS version of the WhatsApp beta testing app.

Based on their beta testing experience, WhatsApp would always select the lower, standard-quality option by default, so users who want to send a higher-quality version of their video will need to select the high-quality option every single time.

Added to that are new tags that indicate the video received are higher-quality resolution — not only will it be easier for recipients to identify at a glance, the tag would likely be helpful for users on limited amounts of mobile data since higher quality resolution in videos would mean bigger file sizes.

Sadly, the beta testers also discovered that there’s still some “light compression” applied to the high-quality version of videos sent, which is unlike other messaging platforms (e.g. Telegram) that lets you send original quality and resolution so long as you keep to the platform’s file size limits. In WhatsApp’s high-quality video sending, the app still keeps the dimensions of the content, but it will not likely be the original video quality.
