**Updated on 6/12/15 at 6pm** Samsung has since responded to SquareTrade tests by pointing out two important considerations that the tests have overlooked. One, according to Samsung, the typical force exerted when a person "presses the back pocket" is approximately 66lbs (30kg), well below the 110lbs that was indicated in the video. Secondly, the front and back of the phones have different strengths by virtue of the materials used. The video only shows the Galaxy S6 Edge being bent from the front and not the back. As a result, Samsung has invited SquareTrade to conduct the tests again to show a more accurate representation of the durability of their phones. Samsung also stated that the phones have undergone rigorous validation tests to ensure that they are not bendable under daily usage. You can read more and even check out their own test video here.
When Apple released its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last year, some users found that their phones became bent after use. This resulted in what became known as "bendgate." Fortunately, it was later revealed that the new iPhones did not bend as easily as some made them out to be.
Now that Samsung has just released its new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge phones, it is time to revisit this bending issue. So third-party warranty firm SquareTrade recently conducted tests to find out how easily new phones such as Samsung's Galaxy S6 Edge and HTC's One M9 bend.
According to their findings, the new Galaxy S6 Edge bends under 110lbs (54kg) of pressure, which is the same as the iPhone 6 Plus. However, the Galaxy S6 Edge reached a point of "catastrophic failure", meaning it could no longer operate, at 149lbs (67kg). In comparison, the iPhone 6 Plus reached "catastrophic failure" at 179lbs (81kg).
It seems that that Samsung's latest phones are just about as durable as Apple's and one should not be too worried about bending them unintentionally. Just remember not to sit on them ok?
