TSMC shut down factories due to virus attack, could affect production of A12 chips

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) was hit by a virus attack on Friday and some of its factories had to be shut down.

TSMC, which is Apple's manufacturing partner for its A-series chipsets, suffered a virus attack on Friday which forced it to shut down several factories.

The chip manufacturer told Bloomberg that several fabrication tools had been infected and believed the virus was not introduced by a hacker. While TSMC had contained the problem and resumed some production, some factories remain closed until Sunday. The company is currently assessing the situation and determine the extent of the infection as it varies from factory to factory.

“TSMC has been attacked by viruses before, but this is the first time a virus attack has affected our production lines,” Chief Financial Officer Lora Ho told Bloomberg News by phone.

Bloomberg reported in May that TSMC has started the mass production of the next generation A12 mobile chipsets for Apple. It's unclear at the moment whether the virus attack and shutting down of several factories have any impact on the production of the chipsets.
