Google might engage TSMC to manufacture its Tensor chipsets next year.

The tip came from leaker @Revegnus1 who shared on X that the Pixel 10 series will be using Tensor chips built by TSMC's 3nm process. Moreover, Google is said to be expanding its R&D lab in Taiwan and recruiting more local engineers to prepare for the switch.

Samsung Foundry has been manufacturing Google's Tensor chips for a few years and this report of the South Korean company being dropped is a huge blow to its ambition to close the gap with the world's most advanced foundry chipmaker.

On the other hand, the switch to TSMC could be good news for Pixel users. TSMC is unrivalled in terms of chipset production and capability and has measurably better-performing chipsets.

For example, the TSMC-made Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 boasts longer battery life and higher performance than the Samsung-made Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Having said that, it is also too early to write off Samsung. After all, the South Korean company has been making strides in its manufacturing capability and production yield of chipsets. It might catch up with TSMC in the next few years.
