The Touch ID might disappear from all iPhone models in 2018
The days of Touch ID are numbered!
Days after reporting that upcoming iPad Pro models might be equipped with Face ID, KGI Securities analyst Ming Chi-Kuo has a similar prediction for the iPhone next year.
In his latest investor note, Kuo claims that all 2018 iPhone models will ditch Touch ID in favor of Face ID. Face ID, which is powered by 3D-sensing technology, is likely to be positioned as a "key selling point" for the 2018 iPhones. Not only is Apple's 3D sensing technology far more superior than the competition, it also allows Apple to release full-screen iPhone designs.
Kuo mentioned that several Chinese manufacturers could launch under-display fingerprint sensors next year, but the high costs could prevent widespread adoption. While Samsung is rumored to be equipping the Galaxy Note9 with an under-display fingerprint sensor, other Android phone makers are reportedly more interested in 3D-sensing technology for their devices.
Apple introduced the Touch ID fingerprint sensor in 2013 with the launch of the iPhone 5s and it appeared on the iPad Air 2 the following year. Of the three iPhone models released this year, the iPhone X is the only one without the Touch ID fingerprint sensor.
