Spigen wants Andy Rubin to stop using the Essential brand name
U.S accessory maker Spigen is accusing Andy Rubin's new company, Essential Products of trademark infringement.
Just a few days after unveiling the Essential smartphone, Andy Rubin's new company - Essential Products - is facing legal action from U.S accessory maker Spigen for trademark infringement.
According to Android Police, a Spigen staff said that the company has sent a cease and desist letter to Essential Products and is awaiting a response. Apparently, Spigen has trademarked the term "Essential" in August 2016 which covers a broad range of items such as computers and scientific devices.
Although Spigen only uses the term "Essential" for some battery packs, chargers and Bluetooth headphones, the accessory maker claims that Essential Products' use of the term would cause confusion for consumers.
In addition, Essential Products had its registration for "Essential" rejected on the same grounds. An Essential official told Android Police that Spigen's assertions "are without merit and will respond appropriately".
