Sony Xperia Z5 Premium renders media in 4K, all other content at 1080p or lower
Sony Mobile has issued an official statement explaining the rationale behind deploying a 4K-on-demand concept for its latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z4 Premium which is the world's first smartphone with a 4K display.

The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium may be the world's first smartphone with a 4K display, but it is not a "true" 4K smartphone.
PhoneArena reported that there were online discussions about the type of content which will be upscaled to 4K on the Xperia Z5 Premium and how screenshots taken during the launch event showed 1080p resolution,
To put the matter to rest, Sony Mobile has issued an official statement to clarify on the matter. According to Sony, "all video and image content" will be upscaled to 4K while "all other content is displayed at 1080p or lower resolution". This is a deliberate attempt "to optimise the performance" and achieve the two-day battery life of the Xperia Z5 Premium.
Sony - "Xperia Z5 Premium features a 4K display with a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels based on SID Standard and enables all video and image content to be enjoyed in 4K resolution. All other content is displayed at 1080P or lower resolution in order to optimise the performance and battery stamina for this device, ensuring you can enjoy the 4K resolution when you need it most."
To put it simply, the Xperia interface on the phone will not be upscaled to 4K. This makes some sense as having a 4K interface could possibly put unnecessary strain on the graphics processing unit and drain the battery faster.
