Sony recently announced the coming of two more Xperia X range smartphones in Singapore. It’s none other than the Sony Xperia XZ we saw at IFA 2016 in Berlin, and the smaller Xperia X Compact.

Sony Xperia XZ

The Sony Xperia XZ packs the water- and dust-resistance (rated at IP65/68) that was found on the old Xperia Z range of smartphones. It’s also slated as the next flagship Sony smartphone in Singapore, as the phone packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with 3GB of RAM, and Hi-Res audio support. Another change is the use of USB Type-C ports.

Sony redesigned the phones when they moved from the Xperia Z to the Xperia X lineup, but not by much. This is also the case for the Xperia XZ – it still leans towards subtlety and minimalism as its core identity, reflected in the Loop Surface concept. The XZ has no sharp edges, showcasing a surface with a smooth, flowing coat that reaches from side to side. The phone's back uses ALKALEIDO Metal to highlight its premium design.

It has a 5.2-inch, Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution) TRILUMINOS for mobile display. It's of a nice size and weight, measuring 146 x 72 x 8.1mm and weighing at 161g. The dual-SIM phone has 64GB internal storage and you can expand it via microSD card (up to 256GB). There's a 2,900mAh battery, enhanced with Qnovo Adaptive Charging technology.

The rear camera uses a 23-megapixel, 1/ 2.3-inch Exmor RS sensor that relies on Sony’s BIONZ mobile image processing engine. It goes up to ISO 12,800, and it comes with a 24mm Sony G lens. It also uses a laser autofocus sensor for speed and accuracy and a new RGBC-IR sensor that makes the camera read colors that are true to life. Together, this makes up the Sony Xperia XZ’s triple-sensor imaging system.

When it was first announced, Sony claimed that the Xperia XZ was the first smartphone to come with a 5-axis image stabilization system for video recording. That’s one more axis than the Xiaomi Mi 5’s quad-axis image stabilization system. However, Sony’s implementation is not as adventurous as we’d like it to be – it only kicks in when the Xperia XZ is recording Full HD (1080p resolution) videos, and only when the camera recognizes macro video. Other recording options will use the traditional 3-axis (pitch, yaw, roll) stabilization instead.

The front camera isn’t neglected either – it’s a 13-megapixel shooter with a 22mm lens that packs a 90-degree field of view. The selfie-shooter is also sensitive up to ISO 6,400.

As the name implies, The Xperia X Compact is the smaller version of the flagship XZ, with a 4.6-inch HD (1,280 x 720 pixels resolution) display, measuring just 129 x 65 x 9.5mm.

While it shares the same camera features as the Xperia XZ, the X Compact uses the Snapdragon 650 SoC instead. It packs 3GB RAM, 2,700mAh battery capacity, and 32GB internal storage (expandable via MicroSD card, up to 256GB).

The single-SIM Sony Xperia X Compact will be available at S$648 on 15th October 2016 through Sony stores and authorized dealers. Colors available are Mist Blue, Universe Black, and White.
