Dual-aperture system could be making a comeback on Samsung phones in the future.
The South Korean company filed a patent with the U.S Patent and Trademark office in October last year and the documentation was recently released. It describes a mobile camera system where sensors can switch position.
The default layout will have the three lenses (ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto) laid out horizontally and change according to the shooting mode. The wide-angle lens can be shifted downwards while the two lenses slide inwards. The varying distance between the lenses also changes the aperture of the lenses.
As the new dual-aperture system can change the field of view, it is able to capture depth of field more accurately and delivers better image quality under different lighting conditions.
Samsung introduced the dual-aperture system on the Galaxy S9 and S10 models, but dropped it from the Galaxy S20 lineup. Perhaps we may see the new dual-aperture system in a Galaxy flagship phone in the near future.
