Two years of dwindling sales and profits in the smartphone industry have forced Samsung to introduce new leadership at its mobile division.

Samsung Electronics announced yesterday that its mobile chief, JK Shin, will be replaced by DJ Koh. Koh previously led the mobile research and development unit, and oversaw the development of Samsung's Tizen OS and Samsung Pay. Shin will still retain his title as co-CEO of Samsung Electronics.

Another high-level executive, BK Yoon, who was the head of consumer electronics unit (TVs and home appliances), will step back and focus on "long-term strategy". He will also retain his title as co-CEO of the company.

The annual year-end reshuffling also saw the promotion of Lee Seo-hyun to President of the fashion group at Samsung C&T Corp. WP Hong, who led the company's global marketing office, is reassigned to the consulting business at Samsung SDS Co.
