Samsung: Next-Gen Galaxy Smartphones to Run on 64-Bit Processors
Samsung's mobile business chief Shin Jong-kyun told The Korea Times that the company's next smartphones will be powered by 64-bit processors.
The Apple iPhone 5S is the world's first and only smartphone at the moment to be powered by a 64-bit processor.
One of the key highlights of Apple's new iPhone 5S is its A7 processor, which is based on a 64-bit architecture. Apple proudly claims that the iPhone 5S is the world's first and only smartphone, but not for long as Samsung has similar plans for its smartphones.
According to The Korea Times, Samsung’s mobile business chief Shin Jong-kyun revealed this plan during his weekly meeting with chief executives of Samsung’s key affiliates in Seoul. Shin said that the next generation of Galaxy-branded smartphones will have 64-bit processing capability.
The Korea Times - “Not in the shortest time. But yes, our next smartphones will have 64-bit processing functionality,” Shin said, adding he followed the media coverage of Apple’s new iPhone.
So what's the hype over 64-bit processors? To put it simply, 64-bit processors can process twice the amount of data compared to the previous generations of chipsets. 64-bit processors also can handle code for more demanding apps such as graphics-intensive games. It seems like the mobile war may shift from display technologies to processing power in the near future.
