The Samsung Galaxy S9 is harder to repair than the iPhone X

The team at iFixit have posted a teardown of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ and the results aren't too surprising: a score of just 4/10, the same as last year's S8 and S8+. For comparison, the iPhone X scored 6/10.

A few things to note from iFixit's teardown:

  • The iris scanner, front-facing camera, IR emitter, and proximity sensor are all pretty much identical to last year's S8.
  • Standard camera lenses use at least five aperture blades to keep the aperture roughly circular throughout many f-stop adjustments. This Galaxy's aperture has just two rotating, ring-like blades for its single adjustment.
  • Glued-down glass on both front and back means a greater risk of breakage, and makes repairs difficult to start.
