Samsung Enters into Patent Cross-Licensing Agreements with Google and Ericsson
Samsung has entered into two patent cross-licensing agreements with Google and Ericsson respectively. Each agreement will reportedly allow involved parties to gain access to each other's patent portfolios, with less risk of patent infringements.
Samsung has entered into two patent cross-licensing agreements with Google and Ericsson respectively. Each agreement will reportedly allow involved parties to gain access to each other's patent portfolios, with less risk of patent infringements.
According to Wired UK, the agreement between Samsung and Ericsson is important as they had been involved in a lawsuit. With this agreement, the Korean company will have to pay Ericsson an initial sum of US$650 million dollars as settlement, with royalty payments to follow. Wired UK reported this agreement covers patents relating to GSM, UMTS and LTE standards for networks and handsets.
On the other hand, the deal between Samsung and Google didn’t come about due to any litigious tussles between the two tech companies. Their agreement signifies their desire to work closely together for more innovations. However, the legal woes of Samsung are far from over. Apple’s copyright infringement lawsuit against Samsung is scheduled to begin again in March this year, in the United States.
