RIM Unveils BlackBerry Tag for NFC-enabled BlackBerry Devices
In the upcoming BlackBerry 7 OS update, the NFC feature, BlackBerry Tag, will be enabled, allowing BlackBerry devices with NFC technology to share information with just a tap.
Is near field communication the next step in the evolution of mobile technology? It's too early to tell, but there's definitely support streaming in from companies such as Nokia and Research in Motion.
In fact, RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie has just unveiled a new way for BlackBerry smartphone users to connect with one another and share multimedia content.
Dubbed as BlackBerry Tag, the NFC feature will be available in the upcoming BlackBerry 7 OS update. Besides multimedia content, BlackBerry Tag allows users to share contact information, documents, and URLs through a simple tap between their BlackBerry smartphones. And for the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) users, this also lets you add others onto your BBM list with just a single tap.
Do note that this feature will only be available for devices with NFC technology integrated within. According to RIM, only NFC-enabled devices such as the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 and BlackBerry Curve 9350/9360/9370 smartphones will enjoy the BlackBerry Tag feature.
RIM is also planning to release the BlackBerry Tag APIs on the BlackBerry platform, allowing developers to tap into the NFC feature of the new BlackBerry devices.
