The recently announced Apple iPhone 16E features significant upgrades over its predecessor, but one feature remains absent: MagSafe. Apple has provided a reason for omitting it.
According to Daring Fireball's John Gruber, Apple representatives shared that the iPhone 16E's target audience segment "exclusively charge their phones by plugging them into a charging cable".
Additionally, Apple says these customers typically do not use wireless charging and even if they do, they are not concerned about how fast or slow the charging speed is.
Apple introduced MagSafe with the launch of the iPhone 12 series and touts it as a better wireless charging solution than others in the market. It features an array of magnets around a wireless charging coil that better aligns the iPhone for a faster wireless charging experience.
Having said that, the iPhone 16E is the first model in Apple's flagship lineup to not support MagSafe. For a company that prides itself on offering a consistent user experience, we reckon this reason may not sit well with some customers.
We recently reviewed the iPhone 16E and found it to offer decent battery life, take great videos and have a mostly good display. However, it is missing Wi-Fi 7 support, Photographic Styles and still comes with a 60Hz display.
