Qualcomm today (20 August 2024) announced the launch of a new lite version of its midrange chipset, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3.

The new “s” variant joins the existing pro-midrange Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 and the standard midrange Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, completing the trio of differentiated mid-tier chipsets that balances power, performance, and price, in their own ways.

As previously explained when Qualcomm first introduced the “s” variants to its Mobile Platforms (the company’s name for its branded System-on-Chips), these “s” variants were meant to pack in the essentials while lowering or discarding other aspects to help save on costs.

To that end, Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is still fully capable of processing generative AI and mobile gaming, while offering capable camera and video access, and more.

When compared to the previous Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, it has nearly 20% better CPU performance, more than 30% better AI performance, and 12% better power savings.

The chipset also did not lose out on essential perks, like camera support for triple image sensor processing, audio support with Qualcomm aptX Lossless, and up to Bluetooth 5.4 support.

Folks who want the technical bits, read here: Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 packs an eight-core Kyro CPU (prime core at 2.5GHz, three performance cores at 2.4GHz, four efficiency cores at 1.8GHz).

It also uses an Adreno GPU (10-bit colour depth support, and HDR10 playback available).

Supported RAM goes up to LPDDR5X (2,133MHz). The chipset’s 5G connectivity via its Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF System can handle mmWave, Sub-5, standalone, and non-standalone 5G. However, it only has up to Wi-Fi 6E support and up to UFS 3.1 support for storage.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 will first appear in a Xiaomi device, which will debut in September 2024. Other phone brands, such as Samsung, Realme, and Sharp, are also launching devices with this processor, so stay tuned.
