Qualcomm brings satellite connectivity to Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 devices
Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon Satellite is the world's first satellite-based two-way capable messaging solution for phones.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon Satellite feature will be available on next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phones in select regions from second half of the year.
Qualcomm just announced Snapdragon Satellite, the world's first satellite-based two-way capable messaging solution for phones.
Supported by Iridium's satellite constellation, the Snapdragon Satellite offers two-way messaging for emergency use, SMS texting, and other messaging apps in remote, rual and offshore locations. Snapdragon Satellite utilises Iridium's L-band spectrum, which is stated to be weather resilient
Qualcomm says emergency messaging on Snapdragon Satellite is slated to be available on next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phones in select regions from second half of the year. In addition, Snapdragon Satellite can expand to other devices such as laptops, tablets, vehicles and IoT.
Garmin is also working with Qualcomm to provide emergency messaging response services. There is no mention on a subscription plan for Snapdragon Satellite.
Qualcomm's Snapdragon Satellitee announcement came a month after Apple officially launched its Emergency SOS via satellite feature in the U.S, Canada and four other countries. For Emergency SOS via satellite, Apple is working with Globalstar to offer the service on iPhone 14 models. It is also making a $450 million investment to provide the critical infrastructure .
