Oppo said its Find X3 series phones may come with 10-bit, full path colour management in its displays
Oppo said the colour spectrum technology can offer true one billion colours for its panels - it was first unveiled at Oppo's Inno Day 2020.
Talk about an odd way to brag.
Oppo posted an odd blog piece titled "The Billion Colour Journey Continues" where the Chinese smartphone brand alluded to its one-billion colour spectrum technology appearing on its 2021 flagship range, the Find X3 series.
We say odd, because Oppo's statement did not directly link its new colour technology to its upcoming devices. This is in spite of its blog post's title, the many references to the importance of displays in smartphones, and the disjointed mentions of their 2020 and 2021 flagship phones (Find X2 and Find X3 respectively).
In the statement, Oppo recalled its 10-bit full-path colour management system that was unveiled at Oppo Inno Day 2020. The colour spectrum is said to support the full DCI-P3 colour gamut "from capture to storage to display", which also alludes to the system working in tandem with a phone's photo-taking capabilities. Oppo also said that the tech will offer "a true billion colour display experience".
While the company did not explicitly say that the colour system will appear anywhere or anytime soon, the blog post had one last line that simply said "stay tuned to meet the Find X3 and see the billion colour stories it will tell". Logically speaking, Oppo should be bringing 10-bit full path colour management and true one-billion colour gamut onto the Find X3 series. It would make for a really strange blog post, if otherwise.
