The OnePlus 6T loses the headphone jack but adds the world's fastest in-display fingerprint scanner

OnePlus just announced its second smartphone of the year, the OnePlus 6T. The 6.41-inch smartphone features a small teardrop-shaped notch, similar to the Huawei Mate 20, and for the first time on a OnePlus phone, an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Just five months after the OnePlus 6, OnePlus is back with its second smartphone of the year, the OnePlus 6T. The 6.41-inch smartphone features a smaller teardrop-shaped notch, similar to the Huawei Mate 20, and for the first time on a OnePlus phone, an in-display fingerprint scanner. OnePlus claims it’s the fastest-performing implementation of in-display fingerprint scanner yet with an unlock speed of just 0.43 seconds.

However, the OnePlus 6T is also the first OnePlus phone without a 3.5mm headphone jack. OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau, says they removed the headphone jack to increase the size of the resonance chamber for the phone's internal speakers, as well as to make room for other components.

The phone has a 6.41-inch AMOLED display with a 2,340 x 1,080 pixels resolution (~402ppi) and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Not only is the teardrop notch small on the 6T, but Lau also pointed out that its chin is smaller too, compared to other Android smartphones.

On the rear, the 6T has the same dual camera setup as the OnePlus 6, comprising of a 16-megapixel f/1.7 lens paired with a 20-megapixel f/1.7 lens. However OnePlus is introducing some new features for the camera, including a new Nightscape feature that’s meant to improve low-light photography. There's also a new Studio Lighting feature, developed in collaboration with photographer Kevin Abosch, which aims to reproduce the lighting you would find in professional portraits.

Performance-wise, the 6T will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with either 6 or 8GB RAM. It will have a 3,700mAh battery, slightly larger than the 3,300mAh unit inside the OnePlus 6.

The 6T will ship on Android 9.0 Pie with the company’s OxygenOS running on top. It will be available in two colors, Mirror Black and Midnight (matte) black, and three configurations:

  • 6GB/128GB: US$549
  • 8GB/128GB: US$579
  • 8GB/256GB: US$629
