NVIDIA Announces Chimera to Take Computational Photography to New Heights
NVIDIA has officially announced its Chimera Computational Photography Architecture. First seen at CES 2013, Chimera's computational photography engine offers leverage to the compute prowess of the Tegra 4 chips in order to perform faster post-processing tasks on captured images.
NVIDIA has officially announced its Chimera Computational Photography Architecture. First seen at CES 2013, Chimera's computational photography engine offers leverage to the compute prowess of the Tegra 4 chips in order to perform faster post-processing tasks on captured images.

During the demonstration at CES this year, we were show the processing capabilities of Tegra 4 prototype tablet when it successfully took a HDR-adjusted photograph and was able to simulate real-time HDR post-processing effects as well. The key features of Chimera are as follows:
- First always-on HDR photos and videos
- First HDR panorama
- First persistent tap-to-track technology
- First single-flash HDR capture
The Tegra 4 tablet managed to take a successful HDR adjusted photo, the processor is powerful enough that to simulate the effect of HDR in real-time as seen in this demo tool shown during a live demonstration at CES 2013. No more wait times associated with applying these post-processing effects!
Most importantly, NVIDIA has managed to get Sony and Aptina; two important players in the camera imaging sensor industry, to support the Chimera Computational Photography Architecture. More are expected to join this initiative and currently, Sony’s Exmor RS IMX135 13 MP sensor and Aptina’s AR0833 1/3” 8MP mobile imaging sensor support Chimera architecture, bringing always-on HDR capabilities to the mass market.
