Nothing phones will soon be able to send iMessages to iPhones

The way Nothing is achieving this might surprise you.

Owners of the Nothing Phone (2) will soon be able to send blue bubble messages to iPhone users thanks to iMessage support that's coming to the new "Nothing Chats" app

How is it doing it? Well, it's down to a messaging platform called Sunbird and the way it works is actually quite simple.

Nothing Phone (2) users will need to sign in to Nothing Chats with their Apple ID, and what's happening in the background is that their messages are routed through a Mac mini on a server farm somewhere.

Those who are conscious of security will immediately recognise that this poses a tremendous security risk.

However, Nothing's FAQ says the way Sunbird works is such that the message is never stored at any point in its journey. It goes on to say that "messages are not stored on Sunbird’s servers and are only live on your device – once a message is delivered, it can only be recovered locally from your personal device."

Furthermore, all messages are end-to-end encrypted and any account will be deleted if it's not active after two weeks.

Be that as it may, there's still no getting around the fact that you are giving up your iCloud access to a third party

Fortunately, the issue of blue bubbles isn't a prevalent one in our region since most users rely on third-party messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. Still, it's interesting to see how Android phone makers are getting around this problem in unorthodox ways.

This feature goes live for Nothing Phone (2) users in North America, the EU, and other European countries on 17 November.
