Nothing users on the Nothing Phone 2(a) can try out the device’s upcoming software revamp, Nothing OS 3.0, via an open beta release.

As announced on Nothing’s community forums, users of Nothing’s midrange phone (review here) can preview its updated OS, which is based on Android 15. Nothing said this is a test run, before they officially release Nothing OS 3.0 in December 2024.

Users of other Nothing Phones can also try out the beta OS, but not at the same time as Nothing Phone 2(a) users. Specifically:

The instructions for installing the open beta OS can be found here. Before you get too excited, know that testing out the software requires a factory reset for the phone. Nothing advises users to backup their data before running any test software.

Nothing OS 3.0 upcoming features

Of course, a major OS update is meaningful to users only if it packs new features for the user’s convenience. Nothing has listed out what are the critical updates they can expect:

  • New Lock Screen customisation, new clock faces, and space for more widgets on Lock Screen
  • Automatic app categorisation into folders within App Drawer (AI-powered), with ability to pin favourite apps at the top
  • Updated visuals for Quick Settings, and specific Settings interfaces (Bluetooth, Network & Internet)
  • Improved app startup speed when launching the Camera app via its widget
  • Reduced scene processing time for HDR shots
  • Improved bokeh in portrait shots (fine-tuning blur intensity based on face size)
  • Improved low-light performance of camera, and zoom slider display
  • Phone “cleaner’ gets an improved pop-up interface that’s resizable and pinnable
  • Partial screen-sharing functionality added
