Motorola has unveiled two new Moto Mods for its Z series smartphones, a Mophie Juice Pack battery and an Incipio car dock. The Moto Z phones are arguably the most successfully take on modular phones so far – Google recently canceled its Project Ara modular phone, and LG’s approach with the G5 and Friends has so far failed to catch on.

The Mophie battery pack features a 3,000mAh battery that claims to provide up to 60 per cent more battery life, and it’s actually larger than the older 2,200mAh Incipio offGRID Power Pack. In addition, it sports a status indicator LED and a USB Type-C port that allows it to be charged even when not connected to your smartphone.

Then there’s the Incipio Car Dock, a charging mount for your Moto Z that connects to your car’s audio system via a 3.5mm output. The dock is designed to clip onto the car’s air conditioning vents, and can hold the phone either vertically or horizontally by clipping to its magnetic back.

When docked, the phone will automatically launch Android Auto to provide a more driver-friendly interface.

The Mophie Juice Pack costs US$79.99, while the Car Dock will set you back by US$64.99. The two are just a prelude to what Motorola has planned for 2017, and the company says it plans to launch even more mods next year, to the tune of four new mods every quarter.

Last month, Motorola partnered with Indiegogo to help spur the development of new mods. It has received close to 380 pitches so far, including for Moto Mod game controllers and a case that changes color according to your mood.
