Microsoft was developing a bezel-less all-screen Windows smartphone back in 2014

Bezel-less all-screen smartphones like the Apple iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy Note8 and Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 are the hottest trend of 2017, but Microsoft was apparently way ahead of the game back in 2014, and then didn't do anything with it.

Windows Central obtained a prototype of an unnamed Windows phone that was basically entirely display, except for the bottom bezel, which housed the front-facing camera. Even more surprising, the phone doesn't appear to have been slated as a flagship, with modest specs, even by 2014 standards, with a 5-inch 720p screen, a Snapdragon 200 chip, 4GB of expandable storage and a 5-megapixel rear camera.

According to Windows Central, this phone eventually became the Lumia 435, a forgettable mid-range device with fat chunky bezels just like every other Microsoft phone at the time. It's unknown why Microsoft cancelled the bezel-less design, but it's probable that Microsoft realized it wouldn't be able to mass manufacturer a device with a bezel-less screen and still sell it at a low/mid-range price.
