LG announced the new X series ahead of MWC 2016. These phones will come with “one exceptional feature” each, without the huge price tags that follow their higher-end phones. The first two phones to debut are the LG X Cam, and the LG X Screen.
LG X Cam – dual rear cameras
LG X Cam.
Focusing on delivering “one of the most advanced camera experience in a mass-tier smartphone”, the 5.2-inch LG X Cam device will feature two rear cameras – one at 13-megapixels resolution, and the other camera at 5-megapixels. LG X Cam’s front camera will be at 8-megapixels.
LG did not reveal the dual rear camera’s functionalities. If we were to go with previous examples (such as the HTC One M8), a dual rear camera setup can provide extra Depth of Field information on the image, plus a series of related features – including, but not limited to the adjusting of focal points of the image after the photo is taken.
The LG X Cam will also feature a curved finish on the front, with a thin profile of 5.2mm at just 118g. Below are the specifications released by the Korean electronics giant.
LG X Cam specifications:
- Display: 5.2-inch FHD In-cell Touch
- Chipset: 1.14GHz Octa-Core
- Camera: Rear 13-megapixels and 5-megapixels / Front 8-megapixels
- Memory: 2GB RAM / 16GB ROM
- Battery: 2,520mAh
- Operating System: Android 6.0 Marshmallow
- Size: 147.5 x 73.6 x 5.2~6.9mm
- Network: LTE
- Colors: Titan Silver / White / Gold / Pink Gold
LG X Screen – “Always On” Second Screen
LG X Screen.
The LG X Screen borrows its key feature from the LG V10. It touts a 1.76-inch LCD (520 x 80 pixels resolution) “Second Screen” above its 4.93-inch HD In-cell Touch display. With the Second Screen, you get to see alerts and notifications without firing up the main screen every time you wish to check your smartphone. The smartphone will be clad in a crystal-clear glass fiber exterior.
The LG X Screen will be pre-loaded with Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS. Relatively speaking, the LG V10 comes with an older Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS. However, the V10 still sits at the higher-end of LG’s phone spectrum; the V10 comes with a 5.7-inch QHD (2,560 x 1,440 pixels resolution) display, supported with 3,000mAh battery capacity. On the other hand, the LG X Screen’s display is merely HD quality with 2,300mAh battery capacity. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor found on the V10 boasts a clock speed of up to 2.0GHz, while the LG X Screen touts an undisclosed 1.2GHz processor.
The V10 has an S$1,088 price tag, and it is likely that the X Series phones will sit at a lower price bracket. Below are the specifications released by LG –there are no further details on the processors found in the X series smartphones.
LG X Screen specifications:
- Display: 4.93-inch HD In-cell Touch main display, 1.76-inch LCD (520 x 80) Second Screen
- Chipset: 1.2GHz Quad-Core
- Camera: Rear 13-megapixels / Front 8-megapixels
- Memory: 2GB RAM / 16GB internal storage
- Battery: 2,300mAh
- Operating System: Android 6.0 Marshmallow
- Size: 142.6 x 71.8 x 7.1mm
- Network: LTE
- Colors: Black / White / Pink Gold
According to LG, the LG X Cam and LG X Screen will be available in Asia, “starting next month”, with no official retail price announced. The phones will be on display at LG’s booth in MWC 2016, Hall 3 of Fira Gran Via from 22 February to 25 February 2016. The flagship LG G5 will instead debut just before MWC 2016.
