LG, Sharp and Japan Display competing with Samsung for future iPhone OLED orders
More display panel makers are stepping up their efforts to secure future iPhone OLED orders from Apple, which may threaten Samsung's position as the sole supplier.
Samsung is likely to face more competition in the coming years from other display panel makers as they ramp up efforts to win future iPhone OLED orders from Apple.
According to DigiTimes, LG Display, Sharp and Japan Display (JDI) have been increasing their efforts to develop OLED technology. Of the three companies, LG Display has the highest chances to be the second OLED supplier this year. This was previously reported by The Investor where it claims that LG Display will start its first OLED shipments from the second half of the year.
Sharp is believed to be ahead of JDI as it is expected to supply OLED panels as early as the second quarter of this year. Moreover, Sharp is said to be planning to use some of the panels for its own high-end smartphones. BOE, China's largest display maker, is reportedly competing to win orders from Apple as well.
DigiTimes also states that there is currently a total of 13 fabs in China which are capable of producing small to medium-sized OLED panels. The combined production capacity is estimated to reach 350,000 units a month. The healthy supply of OLED panels this year could benefit Apple as it is believed to be releasing two OLED iPhones this year.
