Lenovo Spends US$100 Million on Mobile Patents
Following its purchase of Motorola earlier this year, Lenovo is now buying up patents related to 3G and 4G technologies from U.S. company Unwired Planet, spending a total of US$100 million for 21 patents.
Following its purchase of Motorola earlier this year, Lenovo is now buying up patents related to 3G and 4G technologies from U.S. company Unwired Planet, spending a total of US$100 million for 21 patents. Unwired Planet develops mobile technologies commonly used by network carriers, and claims to have about 2500 issued and pending international patents in its portfolio.
In addition to the patent sales, Unwired Planet has agreed to license its patent portfolio to Lenovo for an unspecified number of years.
Lenovo has steadily been increasing its share in the smartphone and tablet industry and released a new flagship smartphone, the Vibe Z, at CES 2014 in January. The purchase of Unwired Planets' patents is likely due to Google retaining many of Motorola's patents in its sale to Lenovo for US$2.9 billion in January this year.
