iOS 11 GM was leaked several days before the official event, and a number of publications and developers managed to dug through the firmware and uncover new information on the iPhones. Some of the interesting features include:

  • Portrait Lighting - a Portrait mode effect which uses depth to simulate different lighting effects such as Contour Light, Natural Light, Stage Light, Stage Light Mono and Studio Light
  • True Tone Display - a display technology for white balancing which was introduced on the 9.7-inch iPad Pro in 2016.
  • Display resolution - 1,125 x 2,436 pixels
  • Animoji - sending of 3D animated emoji based off your facial expressions which is an exclusive feature of the OLED iPhone.
  • Status bar and the notch - the left side of the status bar will feature the system clock time while the right side will have the WiFi, cellular signal strength and battery life.
  • Official names of the new iPhones - iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X
  • Setting up of Face ID and how it works - Face ID can be used to unlock the phone, pay for purchases on iTunes and App Store, and Safari Autofill

It seems like Apple has hardly any surprises left for us on 12 September. Or does it have ONE MORE THING to reveal?
