Apple's upcoming iOS 12 may give third party developers full access to the NFC chip inside the iPhone.

According to The Information, a source claims that Apple is going to make a significant change to the NFC chip so that the iPhone can be used in more contactless interactions beyond just Apple Pay payments.

Possible usage scenarios include using the iPhone as a hotel door key and a virtual transit card for public transportation. The Information adds that Apple is already testing these features at its campus

While Apple rolled out CoreNFC framework in iOS 11 to allow apps to use the NFC chip to detect NFC tags and read messages that contrain NDEF data, the implementation is very limited.

It is very likely that Apple will make this announcement at WWDC 2018.
